This can be taken as a classic statement of the rationale of a Peopleâs War, a war in which Third World people take responsibility for their own fate and fight to liberate themselves.
Bulosan modernizes this sort of revolutionary statement in two Whitmanesque poems about the Philippines, âLand of the Morningâ and âPrologue.â The first of these is reminiscent of âIf You Want to Know What We Are,â a poetic version of Bulosanâs Post essay on âFreedom from Want.â[10] It is, however, a very Filipinized version:
If you want to know what we are, look upon the land
Where the sun is always shining.
